Sick of all the "young professional" groups because professional doesn't necessarily imply intelligent? Want to hang out with a bunch of people who can actually carry a conversation about stuff, make you think, or (gasp) think themselves? Hate the bar scene because you can't actually talk (where "talking" represents a genuine exchange of information of some nontrivial sort)? That's the idea behind this group. Hopefully, we can generate enough interest to get a bunch of people with brains togethe …
Enjoy reading brainy books? Classics of world literature? Philosophy? Something entertaining, yet intellectually stimulating? Do you actually CHOOSE to pick up novels by the likes of E.M. Forster, D.H. Lawrence, Emily Bronte, or maybe Toni Morrison? Does exploring philosophical classics (Plato's Symposium, maybe? Sartre? Hume?) actually appeal to you? If reading great literature with a friendly, laid-back, edgy intellectual crowd turns you on, then this is the meetup for you. We won't t …
The Leesburg Bluestockings gets its name from the 18th century literary club, The Blue Stocking Society. In 18th century England, Blue Stocking women supported each other in intellectual endeavors such as reading, artwork, and writing. The Leesburg Bluestockings meet once every six weeks to discuss "brainy" books. You may not wear stockings anymore (unless you're Kate Middleton!), but as women, we still need to carve out an intellectual forum. Join us!
I started this group because I want to keep up on the latest books on global affairs, international development, foreign policy, economics, or finance. I also wanted to meet other people out there with the same interests who crave stimulating intellectual discussions. I thought this group could serve as a way to motivate us to stay current on the latest literature and lead us into some fun discussions. You should join this group if you are one of the many Washington area professionals (like …

The Center for Inquiry–DC (CFI–DC) offers an opportunity to put your principles into practice by joining other rationalists to work for positive change in society. In addition, the D.C. Center sponsors social events for freethinkers as well as intellectual programming. CFI provides an ethical alternative to religious and paranormal worldviews. In this time of rising religiosity, anti-intellectualism and political turmoil on ethical issues, it is critical that rationalists and freethinkers join t …

The purpose of this group is to discuss books that we find we can't put down after the first reading. We'll discuss the elements of the story that we most connect with. Drinking warm, soothing tea such as jasmine, oolong, mint, constant comment, green leaves with orange peel, or peppermint will enhance your discussion of what we will read. How comfy is that? This group will appeal to diverse women in their 40's or 50's who enjoy laughing and crying over a good read. If you feel as if you would …
So here's my idea. I'm looking to start a group for people that generally feel blah right now. Not depressed, but a little apathetic. I mean, life's good. Decent job, decent pay, but maybe something's missing. You have some fickle passions, or maybe even an overwhelming passion, but it won't pay well enough to quit the professional career you've already spent so much time pursuing. Maybe you'd like to get a dog, but you realize it would be a pain to walk him in the winter every day after a …

Cutting edge discussions yet timeless truths! Weary of the "same old same old"? Want to meet very interesting people outside the customary? Well come connect with others who are interested in Socrates Cafe, a philosophical community. Be a social thinker! Our basic guidelines, established centuries ago in Plato's Dialogues, are that all opinions expressed need to be supported by reasons, and that all assumptions need to be examined. Dialogue is not a competition, a sport or debate with winners …
Like that old, soulful U2 rock anthem, do you sometimes find yourself singing "I still haven't found what I'm looking for?" Or maybe you find yourself “losing your religion" just like that classic R.E.M. song says. But in either case, you definitely feel emotionally distant from the Christian spirituality and Sunday worship you grew up with. Curious to find out why you’re having these feelings/thoughts? But more importantly, curious if there is a better way to think about and practice faith? …

Intellectually curious? If you love the Resident Associate lectures at the Smithsonian, taking advantage of the latest quirky offer from Groupon, or just exploring all the unusual and somewhat geeky things the DC metro area has to offer, this group is for you. We get together and explore the lectures, exhibits, plays and off beat activities of DC, while meeting new people. Our members tend to be in their mid twenties to mid-fifties, but all are welcome.
If your reading interests lean towards non-fiction, or if you are interested in a non-fiction title the Georgetown non-Fiction book Club is for you! We meet once a month at the Georgetown Neighborhood Library in D.C. (on the corner of R St. & Wisconsin Ave.). We'll read recent best-sellers, titles that people are talking about, and what you are interested in!
We are a friendly group of readers who meet on Thursday nights at the Georgetown Branch of DC Public Library. All books we read are available through the library system, so there is no need to buy titles (unless of course you want to support the floundering publishing industry). Anyone who likes to read literary fiction and the occasional not-so-literary title is welcome, as are suggestions for upcoming titles.
